Pakistan Blocks/Bans YouTube!

There's an old (from our youth :p) Bollywood song that goes "Main ro'oon ya hansoon; karoon mai kyaa karoon?!" or "Should I cry or laugh; To do, what do I do?"

Users subscribing to the Internet though the PTCL (Pakistan Telecom Corporation Limited, the semi- or formerly-government-owned corporation), in particular, have been getting the following message today if they tried to access YouTube:

--------------
Dear Internet Users

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (www.pta.gov.pk)has directed all ISPs of the country to block access
to www.youtube.com web site for containing blasphemous web content/movies.

The site would remain blocked till further orders from PTA. Meanwhile, Internet users can write to
youtube.com to remove the objectionable web content/movies because this removal would enable
the authorities to order un-blocking of this web site.

Best Regards

I think this act of government is appreciable as it is the only solid action that has been taken ever since the blasphemist cartoon have been published. Youtube has a lot of contents on its website that are unIslamic and immoral but the government has gone for this particular action in the light of the presence of a video containing blasphemist cartoons. It is not enough for Youtube to just ask for a persons age and enable them to post or view any kind of videos with a rating. With actions taken at such levels will enable Youtube to realize its responsibilities and I think if we all support this government act we would have to wait too long for Youtube to be back on as they would probably remove the contents once we have our voice heard to them loud and clear.

In my opinion the blocking is simply reflecting our nature of being intolerant. Just because someone said something or published something we stop or block the entire website and deny millions of users access to a lot of information.

I strongly condemn the actions of the publisher for publishing such materials, but none the less I feel extremely awkward that instead of initiating a dialog and convincing them to justify their actions and taking legal action we resort to violence and extreme measures that harm our reputations as a nation and as a civilization.

I understand your way of thinking and truly that is not much different than mine. But I dont think that the act in any sense can be termed as "voilent and extreme". Countries across the world do such measures when something goes against there interests including China, India, Thailand etc. We should talk and convince people but I think you can not deny that that has NOT work otherwise they would not have published these things again. Its just to make them realize that one needs to do business with us they should respect our values and make sure their content comply with our laws. I can tell you that if you notice CNN always shows Kashmir as an integral part of India rather than a disputed state and thats because Indian have explicitly told them to do so or pack their business and leave. Nobody specially in global politics accepts your importance if never make them realize your strenght.

Suggest a way that could stop these things from spreading other than this and dialogue (because dialogue has just not worked)
