6.3m Students Are Being Provided Free Text Books

LAHORE, Pakistan : April 18 (PNS) - 6.3 million boys and girl students of class one to five are being provided free text books. This information was given to the President General Pervez Musharraf at a briefing on Punjab education sector’s reforms programme in Lahore.

The Punjab chief minister Chaudry Pervez Elahi said at the briefing that 420 million rupees have been spent on the provision of the books during the first year. The president was informed that as a result of free education up to metric level, provision of free text books and grant of 200 rupees monthly stipend to girls students, the rate of admission in schools has increased upto fifteen percent.
The chief minister said the provincial government has evolved special programme for training of english and mathematics teachers. The Punjab governor retired Lt. General Khalid Maqbool said at the briefing that various steps have been taken to improve the standard of education in different universities of the province.
